Will compressing to 500 KB make my image look bad?

Usually no. Most photos compress to 500 KB with no visible difference at typical viewing sizes. Highly detailed images or images with smooth gradients (skies, skin) may show slight banding.

What if my image is already smaller than 500 KB?

The compressor leaves it alone. No quality loss, no re-encoding — the file stays as it is.

Why does compression sometimes make a PNG larger than the original?

PNGs of photos compress poorly. If your source is a photo saved as PNG, convert it to JPG or WebP first using our format converter — you'll get a much smaller file at the same visual quality.
